How to Replace an audi a4 replacement key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace audi key the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated at the top of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Nissan-New.pngTesting is a bit tricky as there are two different pins for the connector and they perform different functions however the best way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is operational, it should be reading about 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this component, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive reduction in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. When I crank the engine without sparks i put tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I get zero Ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is not plugged in and runs fine when it is connected however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, as i believe that i've completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i am afraid I might have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store. It is easy to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing up). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing, etc. To accomplish this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox, a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire in gear. It is probable that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. They're cheap and easy to find, especially in the case of an Bosch model like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this part would be an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the cause of numerous issues in your car. It's an essential component of the audi keyless go's transmission because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is turning. If this sensor fails, it could affect the performance of the transmission, as well as the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear and transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU is then able to process the signal to control fuel, timig and boost, and also transmitting it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should observe approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those points. This is a standard part across the audi car key holder 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU.
