Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet format of previous albums. It was a more ferocious, consistent effort that had an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. The more edgy sound of the album reflected the maturation of the group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's greater virtuosity on drums, and a more confident, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's work was more precise, sharper and less cloying than earlier efforts.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded an Amsterdam live show that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The studio album came out a few months later, and the group went on a long-distance tour in support of it. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
